The world of acting is competitive, that’s why having an engaging demo reel can be the entry point to landing auditions for roles that fit your type, getting agents and managers to meet and sign you, and impressing casting directors.

As a professional working actor, your demo reel is one of the most important marketing tools in your tool kit because it allows us on the casting side to see what types of roles you can play along with your versatility in a matter of minutes.

Why You Need a Demo Reel:

  • First Impressions Matter: Our first introduction to you on the casting side is often your demo reel. It’s a clear snapshot of your acting skill set and range and a well-laid out reel can leave a lasting impression and increase your chances of being considered for roles. Plus they are a great way to land larger roles you may not have been considered for initially by casting directors.
  • Showcase Your Versatility: Casting directors like myself and agents want to see a range of your talents and that you can handle a variety of roles. Your demo reel allows you to showcase whether your skill set lies in comedy, drama, action, or a mix of other genres like commercials and industrials. Or maybe your reel is a combination of genres.
  • Stay Relevant: We live in the virtual world of auditioning and online platforms like IMDb, your website and your Actors Access account are common ways for industry professionals to review actor’s marketing tools. Your demo reel is an important component of your online presence because without one, you take the chance of being overlooked by industry insiders.

Types of Acting Clips for Your Demo Reel:

  • Your Best Work: Select scenes where you’re the central point of the clip. For example, if you’re in a scene with Jennifer Aniston, we need the scene to highlight you most of the time. Showcase moments where you’re delivering powerful emotions, or memorable moments. Make sure the scene makes sense to us on the casting side and has a beginning, middle and end. Steer clear of showcasing just the emotion without the story behind it. And remember, the quality of your reel is always more important than quantity.
  • Range of Emotions: Showcase your ability to convey a wide range of emotions and genres. Include scenes that demonstrate your abilities to go from one extreme to the next emotionally; happiness, frustration, confusion, and fear, This helps us on the casting side see your depth.
  • Diverse Characters: Include clips that feature you in different roles and settings. If you’ve played a detective, a romantic lead, the killer or quirky sidekick, make sure we get to see that.

Three Tips for Creating a Standout Demo Reel:

Keep It Short and Sweet:

  • Aim for a reel that is around one to two minutes in length. On the casting side, we have limited time, so make every second count.
  • Open with your strongest clip to grab our attention right away. Start on your face or a dramatic opening moment that showcases you vs the star of the show.
  • Edit your clips so there are smooth transitions between your scenes. My personal preference is to have all comedy or drama bunched together. If you don’t have a lot on your demo reel then showcase your strongest, most professional looking scene up top.

Professional Quality is Non-Negotiable:

  • Invest in high-quality video and audio production. Services like Reelarc ensure that you walk away with a professional reel that showcases your type focusing on your strengths. They also write scenes based on your type that may be missing from your electronic presskit. This creates more opportunities to be considered for roles you might not have had the chance to audition for previously, because it gives your representation material to pitch you.
  • If you don’t have money to make an investment in a professional reel service, consider collaborating with an actor friend to create a professional looking self tape using a scene that showcases your type and your range.

Tailor It for Your Audience:

  • Customize your reel based on your target audience. If you’re seeking comedy roles, start with your comedic scenes; for dramatic roles, highlight your emotional range.
  • Update your reel regularly to reflect your latest work and skill set.

Three Mistakes to Avoid in Your Demo Reel:

Overly Long Reels:

  • Avoid the temptation to include every scene you’ve ever done. A lengthy reel can be tiresome for viewers and water down the impact of your best work.
  • Keep your reel concise and focused on your strongest material. Remember, less is more!

Inadequate Scene Setup:

  • Don’t assume viewers will understand the context of your scenes. Always include a scene that helps industry professionals understand your character, situation, and any relevant details of the scene.
  • Transition smooth between scenes. Avoid abrupt transitions between scenes so we have more of a seamless viewing experience.

Low-Quality Clips:

  • Avoid using scenes with poor video or audio quality, even if your performance was exceptional. Distracting technical issues can overshadow your talent. Especially when your scenes are too dark. Casting directors need to see you.
  • If a scene has poor lighting, excessive background noise, or other technical flaws, consider re-shooting it or finding an alternative that maintains the quality of your reel. These issues are something that can be corrected by a professional editor.
